Connecticut College is seeking an Assistant Director of Financial Planning.  Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Finance, the Assistant Director of Financial Planning will serve as the College’s subject matter expert and support all aspects of financial planning for the College including: institutional budgeting, resource planning and modeling, forecasting, financial analyses, business plan/program review, and position management/control. The Assistant Director of Financial Planning provides critical reporting, analysis, presentations, and continuous process improvement and innovation. Compensation includes and excellent benefits package.

  • Implementing and enhancing systems and technologies to collect information and report results to management using dashboards, metrics, and visual aids; participating in team efforts to improve overall financial systems and reporting throughout the College including using advanced modeling software to develop models for scenario planning to provide leadership information for decision-making about institutional resources.
  • Meet with College leadership and stakeholders to lead development and implementation of long-term, short-term, and current year financial plans as part of the College planning cycle for assigned areas.
  • Prepare and present financial forecasts and multi-year planning scenarios and monthly variance reports for the Board of Trustees and other key constituencies, including budget committee(s), department administrators and senior administrators, identifying trends and recommending corrective action; and partner with the Associate Controller and Assistant Controller-Financial and Compliance to reconcile year-end closing, including allocations to restricted funds and reconciling the budget with financial statements.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Vice President for Finance, develop and implement College budget policy and procedures and advance financial business planning competency across the College by providing training to faculty and staff on the College's budgeting policies and systems.
  • Prepare both routine and ad-hoc reports/data sets from enterprise systems and data marts related to general ledger, payroll, development, enrollment, utilities, etc. to support the management and planning of the College’s budget.
  • Participate in the development, calculation and reporting of performance metrics to monitor various areas of the College to meet stated goals.
  • Prepare analyses of major variances of multiple types of funds including operating and restricted, budget utilization, change in forecast, patterns of spend, etc., and develop and implement strategies to maximize the use of all operating and restricted resources.
  • Prepare and present business and investment cases indicating ROI as assigned for new programs, enrollment levels, facilities, centers, capital projects, strategic partnerships, etc.
  • In collaboration with the Vice President for Human Resources and Organizational Development and the Director of Human Resources, create and maintain models for position management, and salary and benefit budgeting.
  • Perform special projects and participates in working groups related but not limited to strategic initiatives, data management, business intelligence, & process improvements.
  • Bachelors degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related required; higher education experience preferred
  • 6 - 7 years of relevant financial reporting experience required
  • Extensive background in financial reporting and analysis; Excellent Excel and financial modeling skills (Pivot tables, PowerPivot, Lookups). Preferred skills include familiarity with database design/querying, data visualization, and a programming language.
  • Experience with financial systems; Banner ERP and Whitebirch modeling software preferred
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of general ledger accounting
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Well-organized, able to work under pressure
  • Ability to interact well with a variety of people from various constituencies within the College and community
  • High integrity needed to handle confidential information
